Women for the World: An Evening with Smith College

President Carol Christ will discuss the Smith's bold plans for reimagining the liberal arts and extending Smith’s reach around the world. Steve Waksman, associate professor of music and American studies, will discuss a milestone moment in music history — the appearance of the Fisk Jubilee Singers at the 1872 World’s Peace Jubilee in Boston, which marked the first time African American singers —several of whom were women — were included in a large music festival in the United States. He will explore the impact of their appearance and how it exemplified what W.E.B. DuBois would later call “double consciousness."
