<cal:ev_description>Metropolitan Opera Broadcast
The Metropolitan Opera in New York City broadcasts live operas into local movie theaters all around the world, and we’re lucky enough to have several of those theaters in the Princeton area. While they cost more than a regular movie, they are much less expensive than an opera at the Met (plus travel into NYC, parking, etc.) And – during the intermissions, you get to see interviews with the opera stars, the costume designers, the conductor – a real glimpse “behind the curtain” that you would never get if you were actually at the Met!

We are planning to attend “The Enchanted Forest” on Saturday, January 21, at 12:55 p.m., at the AMC Hamilton 24 Theaters. Tickets are $23 each.
Puebla, renowned for its distinct Spanish flavor, rich culinary traditions, and magnificent colonial architecture, is, for many, the quintessential Mexican city. It is also home to Smith’s Program for Mexican Culture and Society (PMCSP). Founded in 1531, Puebla boasts an unrivaled legacy of colonial art and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its vibrant, tree-filled zócalo is lined with Spanish arcades and a magnificent 17th-century cathedral. From Puebla, you’ll also venture into the countryside to meet artists and artisans in their native villages and visit private and public art collections. You’ll enjoy excursions to see the murals at Tlaxcala, the treasures of Cuernavaca, and the archaeological ruins of Cacaxtla and Cholula, where you’ll see the largest pyramid in the Americas.</cal:ev_description>

<cal:ev_description>Screening of the documentary film Miss Representation with panel and call to action to follow.

Sunday, January 29, 2:00 PM
Catherine McAuley High School
631 Stevens Ave., Portland, ME

Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, Miss Representation is written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. The film had its broadcast premiere on OWN Oprah Winfrey Network in October 2011.
Movie screening and a talk-back program to follow: Miss Representation.
Featured in the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, it focuses on how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence (and what needs to happen to change that). So it looks at how the characterization of women in the media – from the news to movies and reality TV – affects women and girls (and men and boys) in everyday life, especially as we grow up and imagine our futures.
On Borneo, a vibrant green island in the South China Sea, you’ll find the earth’s oldest rainforest as well as Mount Kinabalu, one of the world’s most important biological sites, with 4,500 plant, 326 bird, and 100 mammal species—an abundance that has earned it a World Heritage designation. In addition to seeing these treasures, on your Malaysian/Bornean expedition you’ll meet the “old man of the forest”—the endangered orangutan—and snorkel the vibrant coral reef of Pulau Sapi. You’ll then embark on an eight-night cruise aboard the colonial-style riverboat Orient Pandaw, sailing on the Rajang, the grandest river in Sarawak (one of the two states that comprise Malaysian Borneo). The tour will be led by Gerry Ellis, an award-winning nature and environmental photojournalist. A post-trip extension to Kuching, the largest city in Borneo, is available.</cal:ev_description>

Cuba’s defiant history makes it a Caribbean island unlike any other. With recent changes in travel policy, you are now able to visit its colonial towns and tropical landscapes and explore its Afro-Cuban culture. You’ll traverse the island from east to west—Santiago to Havana—taking in colonial towns with small squares and cobblestone streets, where you’ll meet contemporary artists to learn their views on thematic shifts in 21st-century Cuban art, trending away from revolutionary content. You’ll also learn the history of Cuban political development at Havana’s Presidential Palace Museum, and have an opportunity to interact with Cubans from all walks of society. Please note that this trip is awaiting a People to People license to be issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.</cal:ev_description>

[Location: Princeton NJ] Metropolitan Opera Broadcast

You’ll enjoy excursions to see the murals at Tlaxcala, the treasures of Cuernavaca, and the archaeological ruins of Cacaxtla and Cholula, where you’ll see the largest pyramid in the Americas.

Friday, February 3
Join us at GRW Theater-University Center, 414 Wood Street, at 6:30 pm, followed by a panel discussion from 8:15-9:30 pm.

Smith Travel -- Hidden Gems of Borneo -- Departure [Date: 14 February 2012, Tuesday]

February 14-29, 2012

A post-trip extension to Kuching, the largest city in Borneo, is available.

Please note that this trip is awaiting a People to People license to be issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
