Steve Waksman, associate professor of music and American studies, will discuss a milestone moment in music history — the appearance of the Fisk Jubilee Singers at the 1872 World’s Peace Jubilee in Boston, which marked the first time African American singers —several of whom were women — were included in a large music festival in the United States. He will explore the impact of their appearance and how it exemplified what W.E.B. DuBois would later call “double consciousness."=0D=0A=0D=0ARegistration: http://alumnae.smith.edu/smithinseattle
