home / alumnae education / home symposium / details
Smith scholars, authors, interior designers, and architects will lead classes and workshops on the role that home plays in our lives. Patty Friedmann '68, acclaimed author of Eleanor Rushing and Side Effects, which is set in her hometown of New Orleans, will give the keynote address and lead a session on "Writing About Place."

Patricia Skarda, professor of English language and literature, will illustrate how some of the world's most famous authors have portrayed the concept of home in their work.

Over lunch, Mimi Hellman '85, assistant professor of art history at Skidmore College, will examine the history of cooking and dining spaces as they relate to shifting attitudes about domesticity and body image. Interiors expert Virginia Hayman Cohen '64 will offer Interior Design 101, and Smith lecturer Gretchen Schneider '92 will teach the basics of architectural design.

A tour of campus houses will show how different architectural details represent distinct periods in Smith's history, and visits to the nearby historic homes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe will enhance your understanding of how the spaces we inhabit shape our lives.
