Book Discussion: The Portrait of a
Lady
, Henry James

May 18, 2007

Michael Gorra, Mary Augusta Jordan Professor of English

“Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady (1881) has a double strength. It is
an extraordinary account of what it is to be an American—a complex
fate, in James’s own words—and, at the same time, it’s a turning point in
the history of the novel, a book that shows consciousness in a new way
and refuses the neatness of Victorian endings.”
