Searching within a single issue. Type the words of your choice in the search box, and then either press return or choose “Search this publication.” Your search results will be automatically sorted by page number (first to last). Hovering over a result will yield a thumbnail of the page on which the search term appears. Clicking on a result will take you to that page. Please note that the search term will not be highlighted on the page.

Searching the entire archive. Type the words of your choice in the search box, and then choose “Search all archives.” Your search results will be automatically sorted by issue (newest to oldest) as well as page number (first to last). Clicking on a result will take you to the issue and page on which the search term appears. Please note that the search term will not be highlighted on the page.

Search results. Search results are automatically sorted by page number (first to last) and, if applicable, issue (newest to oldest). Search results cannot be filtered or customized.

Names. Alumnae names include first, maiden and last names, in that order, generally with no punctuation: Julia McWilliams Child ’34. If a full-name search does not yield the desired result, try a different combination of names (Julia Child) or just one name (Julia). Please note that in issues prior to November 1969, alumnae maiden names may be enclosed within parentheses: Julia (McWilliams) Child ’34.

Nicknames. Nicknames are enclosed within parentheses: Katherine (Chummy) Hall Piper ’43. The search function recognizes but does not require parentheses for a single word, so you can search for (Chummy) or Chummy, but a search for Katherine (Chummy) Hall Piper ’43 must include the parentheses.

Capitalization. The search function is not case sensitive. A search for Campus Center is the same as a search for campus center.

Punctuation. The search function requires the use of relevant punctuation in order to yield accurate results. For example, a search for a hyphenated name or phrase must include the hyphen: Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy ’02, not Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy ’02. The same is true for commas: Barcelona, Spain, not Barcelona Spain.

Special characters. The search box does not accept special characters, such as the accented e in Grécourt. Try Grecourt instead of Grécourt, or just use Gates (or gates) instead.

Photo captions and decorative fonts. Photo captions and text written in decorative fonts or logos are not searchable. Searching for text that appears in a photo caption or a decorative font will not yield any results.

Search operators. Google search users may be accustomed to using search operators and other punctuation like dashes, quotes and asterisks to get more specific search results. The SAQ archive does not accommodate advanced search techniques.

Troubleshooting. If your search is unsuccessful, try a variation on the search term. Add or subtract punctuation, names or words. Check your spelling. A few different searches for the same query may be necessary to gather the full range of results.
