he exciting cities of Santiago and Buenos Aries beckon in this South American adventure that will also take you to the breathtaking glaciers, fjords, and mountain peaks of Patagonia.
Begin in Santiago, where the Pre-Columbian Art Museum, Museum of Art, and Museo de la Merced, with it priceless collection of Easter Island artifacts, will enthrall. Stroll La Alameda, the city’s main avenue; take in the whimsy of La Chascona, the home of poet and Nobel Prize laureate Pablo Neruda; and join Chilean artist Roberto Edwards as he hosts you and some fellow artists for cocktails at his Cuerpos Pintados headquarters. And you won’t want to miss the Santa Rita Winery in the picturesque town of Pirque, in the Maipo Valley at the foothills of the Andes.
Board the expedition vessel Mare Australis and feast your eyes on a wonderland of natural beauty and incredible flora and fauna, as you travel through Patagonia, one of the southernmost points in the world. Stops include the Marinelli Glacier, with its beaver dams and elephant seal colony, and the Pia Glacier. Sail through Glaciers Avenue and land at Cape Horn National Park, where the Atlantic meets the Pacific, then finally on to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world.
Next stop: Buenos Aires, where you’ll enjoy a specially arranged visit to the presidential Casa Rosa, where Eva Peron stood on the balcony and waved to the people below, and to the Colón Theater, the world-famous opera house, for a behind-the-scenes visit. You are also invited to view the private collection of contemporary Argentine and Latin American art of Jorge and Marion Helft and to be received at the residence of the U.S. ambassador—all this in addition to relishing the city’s many sites of interest, including the Isaac Fernandez Blanco Museum of Hispano-Americano Art and the Eva Peron Museum.
