In 2006, through Smith College’s Alumnae Travel Program, alumnae and their families arrived in Tanzania, Africa, and later visited Arusha, Karatu, and Tarangire (Tanzania’s fourth largest park), and observed elephants, buffalo, and giraffes along the banks of the Tarangire River. They also visited a picturesque coffee estate and working organic farm in the Ngorongoro Highlands, before descending 2,000 feet to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, home to buffaloes, hippos, and wildebeests. Finally, they arrived at the great Serengeti, with nearly 6,000 square miles of seemingly endless plains, rocky outcroppings, and incredible sunsets.
