For thousands of years the Central
Asian nations of Uzbekistan
and Turkmenistan were critical fulcra
on the Silk Road, along which
passed silks and spices, as well as
ideas about art, architecture, science,
and religion. Today’s Silk
Road, made up of railroads and
pipelines, is again propelling the
region to prominence. Your journey
begins in Uzbekistan’s modern
capital of Tashkent, from which
you’ll visit the country’s World
Heritage sites: Tamerlane’s capital,
Samarkand; Bukhara, one of the
oldest cities of the Persian Empire;
and Khiva, with its unparalleled
Islamic architecture. You’ll also visit
the ancient Parthian Kingdom of
Nisa, a World Heritage site. Bryn
Mawr Alumnae Association is co-sponsoring
this program.
