The ancient, affluent city of Lucca lies on the Tuscan plain just miles from the Mediterranean, circled by Renaissance walls. With Lucca's four-star Hotel Ilaria as your base, you'll walk the less-beaten path of western Tuscany. You'll visit wineries in the Maremma designed by internationally renowned architects Renzo Piano and Mario Botta; stroll seaside paths of the Cinque Terre; follow in Michelangelo's footsteps in the famed marble quarries of Carrara; and explore Volterra, a windswept hilltown where you'll have a specially-prepared lunch of organic local foods at a private villa. In Lucca, wander through the city's unparalleled Romanesque pilgrimage churches, which gleam in white marble against the brick-and-terracotta city.
