he fabled West African city of Timbuktu, located in Mali at the edge of the Sahara, is one of the most isolated places in the world. Getting there can be arduous, so to avoid long drives you'll travel by chartered jet directly into the city. You'll visit the 19th-century French colonial town of Segou as well as Djenne, the oldest city on the ancient trans-Sahara caravan route and home to the Grand Mosque, the world's largest mud-brick structure. For a more complete picture of the region, you'll board the 34-guest yacht Callisto and cruise the inland waterways of Senegal and the Gambia, where you'll be surrounded by the rich wildlife of the Casamance, Gambia, and Saloum rivers.
