Pioneers Claim National Runner-Up Finish After Historic Season
Last Saturday, Smith’s basketball team played its first-ever national title game against NYU. The Pioneers concluded the season with a 30–4 record. “I’m proud of our crew for buying in and putting that effort forward. We battled for 40 minutes,” said head coach Lynn Hersey.

Founder of the Mara Hyena Project, Holekamp has been studying African spotted hyenas since 1988. In this recent article, she goes into detail about how females are “the backbone of hyena society” and how these mammals are fierce, intelligent, and adaptable creatures.

Neuroscientist Theanne Griffith ’08 Named 2024 Sloan Research Fellow
An assistant professor at the University of California, Davis, Griffith received a two-year, $75,000 fellowship in recognition of her research accomplishments. According to a press release, her future research will explore proprioception and neurodegenerative diseases.

In the 1970s, Dowd spent a month shadowing her brother Ned’s hockey team. According to The Athletic, that experience inspired her script for Slap Shot, a classic film about a rowdy group of athletes who rally to win a championship.

Katy Haas ’06’s Film to Air on Maine Public Television
Directed and produced by Haas and filmmaker Megan Ruffe, La Frontière will air on Thursday at 9 p.m. EST and Saturday at 2 p.m. EST. The documentary explores the stories of Maine residents living on the borderlands of Canada.
