For this exclusive-to-Smith feature, Professor Jonathan Hirsh traveled to California to interview his former pupil, Chan, who was then serving as guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. “Being a conductor is one of the coolest and craziest jobs ever,” Chan says in the article, which looks back on her time as a student at Smith and highlights many of her professional accomplishments since graduation.

As a newly elected member, Gorra is being recognized for having “the curiosity, creativity, and courage required to reach new heights,” the academy’s president said in a statement. Past academy members include Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, and Madeleine Albright.

Tomorrow, the Smith community is invited to a celebration in honor of the basketball team’s NCAA Division III national runner-up finish. President Sarah Willie-LeBreton and head coach Lynn Hersey will speak at the event, which will kick off at 6 p.m. on Chapin lawn.

According to a statement, Bradley and the other 187 fellows (representing 52 disciplines) will be able to pursue independent work under “the freest possible conditions.” A visionary filmmaker, Bradley was also the subject of this 2022 Smith Alumnae Quarterly feature story.

Named as a nominee for the Corporation for National and Community Service’s board of directors, Sagawa previously served in the White House under Presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. She also received the Smith College Medal in 2011.

Earlier this year, Seidel was named as one of five new members of the Boston-based nonprofit’s board of directors. According to a statement, the LZF’s mission is to provide resources and other forms of support to those most impacted by inequity.
