Juliana Makonise ’25 Among Winners in United Nations Essay Contest
After being named a winner in the Beyond GDP essay competition, Makonise spoke at a UN Geneva meeting in April. Her winning essay advocates for a human-centered approach to calculating gross domestic product. Makonise also hosts the On the Spot With Juliana podcast.

Sa’mya Wilson ’24 Receives $10,000 Grant From Projects for Peace
A global program that solicits responses to the world’s most pressing issues, Projects for Peace chose Wilson’s proposal as its 2024 winning initiative. Wilson’s work will focus on implementing a poetry workshop for adolescents impacted by adversity, economic, and housing challenges.

Professor Aaron Kamugisha Named National Humanity Center Fellow
The NHC recently announced it will award approximately $1.5 million in grants to 31 fellows, including Kamugisha, for them to pursue research at the center. Kamugisha’s study is titled Bewildering Coloniality: Austin Clarke and the Twentieth Century Black Atlantic World.

Zoë Gardner ’22 Teaches Students How to Make Boutonnieres
Just in time for formal dance season, a Botany for Gardeners class partook in hands-on flower labs in conjunction with floriculture and herbal medicine lectures. A local artist and educator, Gardner showed the students how to arrange flowers in creative ways.

Interactive Map Shows Span of 1874 Mill River Flood
Tomorrow marks 150 years since the flood that killed 139 locals and damaged several Massachusetts areas. Recognizing the anniversary, Smithies made a map with facts related to the flood. The college will also honor the dead with a Mendenhall Tower bellringing at 1 p.m. EST and a handbell concert outside First Churches at 1:20 p.m.

Smith Students Launch ‘Crush’ Literary Magazine
Led by editors and co-founders Kaday Jarra ’26 and Maya Barrientos ’26, Crush Magazine launched its inaugural issue this month. Featuring poetry, personal essays, short stories, and works of art, the literary magazine’s spring 2024 issue is now online.

Lindsey Dawson ’04 Joins Webinar on LGBTQIA+ Health Care
On May 21 at 2 p.m. EST, Dawson will be one of three panelists speaking about forward-thinking approaches to combating discrimination in health care. The free webinar will also offer tips for discussing LGBTQIA+ health matters with nuance and thoughtfulness.
