On May 16, the college celebrated the contributions of several outgoing educators. Now 102, Zecil Gravitz spoke with The Boston Globe about her younger days as a wartime participant in the Women’s Auxiliary Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). Following a nine-week training program in Northampton, she served at the Naval Academy at Annapolis.

On one of her many trips to Maine, Sullivan says she came across an oceanfront house that inspired her upcoming release, The Cliffs. Author of Friends and Strangers and several other bestsellers, Sullivan was highlighted in a 2020 Smith Alumnae Quarterly feature.

A visiting assistant professor of art at Smith, Pierce was one of 60 scholars recognized as a 2024 ACLS fellow. According to a release, each fellow will receive approximately $60,000 to support six to 12 months of sustained research and writing.

On May 3, Thoresen received an AmplifiHER award in honor of her long service as a community leader, volunteer, and philanthropist. According to a statement, Thoresen helped found a predecessor organization of the Women’s Foundation.

Running through February 2025 at the D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, this exhibit highlights the lives and achievements of women who notably defied the status quo, including author Sylvia Plath ’55 and journalist Ida B. Wells.

Under her new title of associate clinical professor, Rivera will focus on housing justice at the Boston school. “It’s a privilege to be returning to the B.C. Law family to build on [its] long tradition of housing advocacy,” Rivera said in a statement.

In this recent piece for The Atlantic, Mertens identifies a growing social media trend: the quarter-life–crisis marathon. Citing research by psychotherapist Satya Doyle Byock, Mertens explores why millennials and 20-somethings are increasingly taking to running.

During her three-year term on the Princeton Area Community Foundation board of trustees, Bullock will help oversee more than $240 million in assets. Bullock is also the founder of Master Plan Investment Group in Pennington, New Jersey.

From June 4 to 6, CLAC 2024 will take place in Northampton. This annual conference is attended by dozens of national institutions and provides an opportunity for participants to learn from one another, share work, and plan for the future.
