Smith Bids Farewell to Retiring Faculty Members

On May 16, the college celebrated the contributions of several outgoing educators. Clockwise from top left are David Bickar, Barbara Brehm-Curtis, Brigitte Buettner, Rick Fantasia, Beth Powell ’78, Joel Pitchon, Thalia Pandiri, and Martine Gantrel-Ford. These eight retiring faculty members have a combined 322 years of service to Smith.

Prof. Kathleen Pierce Named American Council of Learned Societies Fellow

A visiting assistant professor of art at Smith, Pierce was one of 60 scholars recognized as a 2024 ACLS fellow. According to a release, each fellow will receive approximately $60,000 to support six to 12 months of sustained research and writing.

Susan Werner Thoresen ’66 Honored by N.H. Women’s Foundation

On May 3, Thoresen received an AmplifiHER award in honor of her long service as a community leader, volunteer, and philanthropist. According to a statement, Thoresen helped found a predecessor organization of the Women’s Foundation.

Ana Rivera ’89 Joins Boston College Law School’s Faculty

Under her new title of associate clinical professor, Rivera will focus on housing justice at the Boston school. “It’s a privilege to be returning to the B.C. Law family to build on [its] long tradition of housing advocacy,” Rivera said in a statement.

Ka’Neda Ellison Bullock ’06 Named Trustee for N.J. Foundation

During her three-year term on the Princeton Area Community Foundation board of trustees, Bullock will help oversee more than $240 million in assets. Bullock is also the founder of Master Plan Investment Group in Pennington, New Jersey.

From June 4 to 6, CLAC 2024 will take place in Northampton. This annual conference is attended by dozens of national institutions and provides an opportunity for participants to learn from one another, share work, and plan for the future.
