Professor Laura Grandi on Working Live Music Into Dance Performances
A tango instructor in Massachusetts and Vermont, Grandi invited Argentinian guitarists Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom to perform at a recent dance recital. Their music, she tells the Valley Advocate, creates an enjoyable ambience for dancers and onlookers alike.

Mary Gallagher ’91 Appointed Dean of Notre Dame’s Global Affairs School
On July 1, Gallagher begins a five-year term as the Marilyn Keough Dean of the Keough School of Global Affairs. In a statement, Notre Dame’s President the Rev. John Jenkins calls Gallagher a leading political scientist who “will be an outstanding addition to our senior leadership.”

Smith Co-Leads Research on Equity Aspects of Carbon Taxes
Developed in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a new method employs spatial microsimulation to provide insights into the distributional consequences of carbon taxes. Smith Professor Susan Sayre collaborated on the research with Nathan Chan of UMass.

Kaci Bishop ’94 Named Endowed Chair at UNC Law School
In April, Bishop was appointed Martha Brandis Term Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law. According to a statement, she has been a faculty member at the school for more than a decade and most recently served as director of its immigration clinic.

Jane Yolen ’60 to Hold Author Talk Tomorrow in Connecticut
On June 13 at 5:30 p.m. EST, Yolen will sign books and read for an audience at Bank Square Books in Mystic, Connecticut. Author of a 2024 compilation of poetry called In and Out the Window, Yolen is also known for such releases as The Emperor and the Kite and Owl Moon.

Professor Halie Rando Researches Efficacy of Dog DNA Tests
The lead researcher on a University of Colorado study, Rando explains in this ABC affiliate article that accurate dog DNA testing is possible, but that not all DNA tests are created equal. For example, Rando notes, “We found that Accu-Metrics was less accurate than artificial intelligence at predicting the breed of the dog.”

Eda Uykal Stark ’08 Joins Blank Rome LLP in Washington, DC
Earlier this year, Stark became an associate for the firm’s intellectual property litigation group. According to a statement, she represents innovator companies across a range of industries in disputes related to technology.
