When the Supreme Court ended affirmative action in college admissions last year, Smith was prepared with new programs and recruitment strategies to promote diversity in the college’s student body. “Geographic, socioeconomic, academic, family background, extracurricular diversity, as well as racial and ethnic diversity—all of those things are important to us as a community in producing a stellar learning environment,” notes Dean of Admission Deanna Dixon ’88.

This award comes with $100,000 and will be reserved for artists sparking conversation and advocacy around climate, conservation, and sustainability issues, according to a statement. The inaugural winner will be announced before the end of 2024.

This new research examines the genomic sequences of myriad microbial species. “With this research we now know there are way more sources producing nitrous oxide than previously thought,” notes the study’s senior investigator, Woody Fischer.
