Celebrating 20 Years of Julia Child Day
The late Julia McWilliams Child ’34 is celebrated every year at Smith with her own holiday. Tomorrow, for the 20th annual Julia Child Day, some of her beloved recipes will be served across campus. Child’s book Mastering the Art of French Cooking was recently included in a T Magazine list of 25 influential cookbooks from the past century.

Professor Christophe Golé’s New Book Explores Plant-Math Connection
In the new book Do Plants Know Math?, co-author Golé explores how great minds have been captivated by the growth of plants. “[Plants] embody math. They’re, in a sense, little calculators,” says Golé, who’s also part of a plant-focused project for the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute.

Liz Seymour ’87 Becomes Managing Editor of ‘Washington Post’
Seymour, who most recently served as the paper’s deputy managing editor, is stepping into a new leadership role with the Post during her 25th year of service. “No one is a fiercer advocate for Post journalism than Liz,” says the publication’s executive editor, Matt Murray.

Alums From 19 Countries Come Together for Smith in Europe Reunion
Held from Oct. 24 to 27 in Paris, this year’s gathering was attended by nearly 70 alums representing classes from 1952 to 2024. Highlights of the reunion included a speech from Smith College medalist Sarah Belal ’01, a tour of France’s national library, and dinner at Halle aux Grains.

Nicole Clegg ’92 Promoted at Planned Parenthood Chapter
Clegg has been with the nonprofit since 2013, and in October she was appointed CEO and president of the northern New England chapter, which services approximately 32,000 patients across 15 clinics. In her previous role as interim CEO, Clegg notably led the chapter through the COVID-19 pandemic and overturn of Roe v. Wade.

American Epilepsy Society To Honor Frances Jensen ’78
During the American Epilepsy Society’s annual meeting from Dec. 6 to 10 in Los Angeles, Jensen will be given a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her outstanding service in the epilepsy field and commitment to advancing the organization’s mission. Jensen is neurology chair at the University of Pennsylvania.

Amy Namowitz Worthen ’67 Appears on ‘Platemark’ Podcast
During Episode 67, Worthen speaks with Platemark host Ann Shafer about her long career in printmaking, her early artistic influences, and her time as an undergrad at Smith. An exhibition of Worthen’s large-scale drawings and engravings is on display at the Smith Alumnae House through Jan. 10, 2025.

Educators Giovanna Bellesia, Victoria Poletto Earn Book Award
Bellesia, professor emerita of Italian studies, and Poletto, senior lecturer emerita in Italian language and literature, collaborated to translate My Language Is a Jealous Lover by Adrián Bravi; in recognition of their work on the book, they received the 2024 Translated Literature Award from the Massachusetts Book Awards.

Diana Katz Gerstel ’94 Makes Best Lawyers in America List
A partner at the Tucker Ellis law firm, Gerstel is experienced in defending pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers on a state and federal level. She was recently included in a roundup of 78 breakout lawyers in the U.S. for her strength in product liability litigation.
