When Smith Became a Training Ground for Codebreakers

The Summer 2019 issue of the Smith Alumnae Quarterly highlights the role of Smithies—and the college itself—in bringing an end to World War II. In early 1942, a few weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Smithies were secretly recruited by the U.S. Navy to crack enemy codes, while Smith College became a training ground for the Navy’s first women officers.

Nava Grunfeld, M.A.T. ’81, Exhibit Opening Reception on Friday

On Feb. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. EST, the Smith Alumnae House will host an opening reception for a retrospective of still lifes and figure paintings from Grunfeld. The exhibition, called Lit from Within, will remain on display through April 18.
