President’s Message

November 2018

Dear 1960 Classmates,

All your officers have been busy!

We met at Robbin Levy’s house in Pleasantville, N.Y. in March to discuss our 60th Reunion, now just 1½ years away. Marna Hayden and Diana Young Humphrey are Reunion co-chairs. 60@60 will be a Diamond Jubilee. SAVE THE DATE: May 21-24, Memorial Day weekend 2020.

Kay Dunn Lyman has been doing a great job of writing and sending in our Class Notes. Thanks to all of you who send her your news. When we lose a classmate Kay asks for someone who knew her to write an obituary for the Smith Alumnae Quarterly. We lost 10 classmates this past year. Sandra Newman Colbert, Nancy Beck Cross, Gretchen Leutheuser Davis, Laura Hockaday, M.J. Long, Gwendolyn O’Brien Marsh, Nancy Hersey Paulson, Janet Gamer Perlman, Frances Patton Saybolt, Ingeborg von Berghes.

Many of us celebrated our 80 years young! I’m not there yet, and I wish you all very happy birthdays and many good years ahead.

We have a new Class of 1960 Memorial Scholarship Scholar, Megan Barstow, Class of 2020. She is an engineering major and plans to attend law school after Smith in order to pursue a career in government service. Our Memorial Scholarship Fund is part of the Smith Fund, but you may have difficulty finding it on the Smith form and website when you donate. You must list “other” and put in the name, Smith Fund Class of 1960 Memorial Scholarship Fund. Your donation to this fund will count in our total class giving for the year. We have a very generous class. Our Fund Team raised $498,069 in fiscal 2018 of which $200,758 was to the Smith Fund. The Smith Fund is critical for current needs, and our 1960 Memorial Scholarship Fund enables Megan to continue her last two years at Smith. You may get a call from one of our Fund Team volunteers or a present Smith student. Please continue to make our Class a winner again.

Marna and Diana are getting their Reunion team together now. Please be a part of the team as a House Rep, round-table discussion leader for your favorite topic, an exhibit chair, hospitality chair, or other. I was chair of House Reps for our 50th, and it was a great opportunity to talk to many of you I never knew at Smith.

Robbin reports we are in good financial shape with an account balance of $10,611.12. We will be able to provide help with Reunion costs to those who ask Robbin. All is confidential.

Julia Brown Gordon, President
