VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Class of 1963 Reunion Planning has met and plans for our SIXTIETH REUNION next year are underway. It will be on May 18 – 21, 2023.

We would love to hear from volunteers who would be able to plan and help in the following areas:

  1. SURVEY: We are hoping to do a survey of our class with regard to their lives, attitudes, hopes, dreams. Results will be announced at the reunion. Contact either Carole Whitehill (carolehwhitehill@gmail.com ), Julie Conger (julieconger55@gmail.com) or Judy Aydelott (aydelottjudy@gmail.com)
  2. SLOGANS: Put your thinking caps on for witty mots for the signs we carry in the parade; our theme is “Navigating Forward”. Contact either Julie Conger (julieconger55@gmail.com ) or Carole Whitehill (carolehwhitehill@gmail.com )
  3. ART SHOW: Susan Lampman Hill (susanartlover0@gmail.com ) has again agreed to be our Art Chair for the Reunion. We hope to emulate the class of 1962 presentation of a video display of classmates’ masterpieces which was on continuous play in the living room of the 1962 headquarters (Gillette House) and could be transmitted electronically to non-attendees.
  4. HEADQUARTERS: We will be housed in either Gillette House or Northrop House, both of which are very central to the events planned elsewhere on campus; our campus contact Jodi Fallon Fern has assured us that all transportation concerns that have arisen in the past are being firmly addressed. Karen Bass Torop (toroptorop@gmail.com ) will be in charge of organizing what is needed for the 1963 Headquarters and would very much appreciate volunteers to collect items such as tote bags, umbrellas, thermos bottles and other possible fillers for the 1963 bags.
  5. PROGRAMS: We have two hours allotted for the programs of interest to the Class of 1963; these programs will be available by Zoom for non-attendees. The Planning Committee has enthusiastically supported the idea that one of the hours be devoted to the Library Special Collections, featuring feminist archives and memoirs. We would appreciate any suggestions about program ideas such as faculty speakers, issues of interest to our class, theatrical or creative artistic productions etc. Please contact either Carole Whitehill (carolehwhitehill@gmail.com ) or Julie Conger (julieconger55@gmail.com )
  6. MEMENTOS: Many of you may have old pictures or programs or mementos that will bring fond memories and could be displayed in the Headquarters.

  7. HAVE YOU WRITTEN A MEMOIR? Memoirs of our classmates, as well as any books or productions by members of the Class of 1963 would be wonderful to share either on display at the Headquarters or referenced. Headquarters Chair is Karen Torop (toroptorop@gmail.com ).

Our Class Website is looking great thanks to Carol Lightwood (carollight@wbcglobal.net ). If you go to Google and type in “Smith College Class of 1963” it will be the first listing on the results page. Be sure to visit the new feature “What Brings Me Joy!”

There has been a wonderful response to the Zoom meetings that several houses have begun – and we encourage all the houses to try to unite their members in this manner. The Class of 1963 has purchased a Zoom account which would be available for use if requested (contact Carole Whitehill (carolehwhitehill@gmail.com ) but we are finding that most often a house member has an account and can be the host for the meeting.

Thank you in advance for all your help!

And, here is the Reunion Committee

In June, the Reunion committee officially met via Zoom to hear what Julie and Carole learned when they attended the 1962 Reunion in late May.  Watch for a message/email from your House Rep. about upcoming activities for the Reunion — even if you’re not planning to attend in person.
