The tour will take place from July 13-21, 2019. We are delighted that the SCAC’s latest international journey will allow us to explore Slovenia’s vibrant musical culture, beautiful landscape, and storied history. What a thrill to embark on another memorable musical adventure with you next summer!
You must register for the tour and submit an initial deposit of $400 no later than September 17, 2018. To guarantee your spot, please click here to register. For more information about our travels, our singing, financial aid, and other pertinent information, read on!
We are honored to have the opportunity to visit Slovenia and experience its cultural beauty. Classical Movements, a premier touring company for both professional and amateur ensembles, will organize our itinerary and arrange our two performances. Our 9-day tour will take us to the capital city of Ljubljana; the natural beauty of Lake Bled; Maribor, which was named the European Capital of Culture in 2012; as well as a possible day trip to Trieste, a seaside city along the northeaster Italian coast that borders Slovenia.
More details will be available in the near future.
Under the direction of Jonathan Hirsh and in partnership with local singers and musicians, we are planning to perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” to commemorate the bicentennial of Walt Whitman’s birth and Haydn’s “Missa in Angustiis” (also known as the Lord Nelson Mass). More details about music score editions and how to purchase them will be available in the near future.
We estimate that the final cost of the tour per participant will be approximately $3,975. Because the price is dependent upon the number of people who sign up and the final price of the airfare, we regret that we are unable to provide an exact cost at this time. All registered participants will receive the final cost and additional itinerary information in the fall. In the meantime, we encourage you to reserve your space, submit a deposit, and make payments during the summer and as frequently as your budget permits.
This covers round-trip airfare from our departure city (possibly NYC or Boston) to Slovenia; hotel; guided visits to local attractions; more than half the necessary meals, including daily breakfasts; two concerts with local men’s choirs and orchestras; all necessary tips, and the musical director’s honorarium. What’s not included: some meals during the trip, vocal scores*, pre-departure trip cancellation insurance and post-departure trip interruption travel insurance. You will have the option to purchase post-departure travel insurance through Travelex 360 at a nominal fee.
*Each singer will need to cover the costs of purchasing the vocal scores. We estimate a cost of $50 per person. Once a distributor is chosen, we will inform you on the final price and how to order these materials.
All participants in the tour must be registered members of the Smith College Alumnae Chorus. If you have not yet signed up as a member, please click here to do so now. Please note that non-Smithies and non-singing friends, partners, and family members are welcome to join us but they must all individually register as members of the SCAC. Membership ensures the continuity and vibrancy of the Alumnae Chorus and makes events like the Slovenia tour possible.
