Disability Visibility Day at Smith College. 400 blue folding chairs on Chapin Lawn. Sun glare in upper left corner and trees have no leaves on them yet.
This group has not hosted any events so far but previous events hosted by Smith College’s on campus group- Smith’s Disability Alliance include:
- Disability Visibility Day in 2014. This event included an installation piece and a personal storytelling component. For the installation portion, historical facts, quotes, artwork, images, anecdotes etc., were attached on the backs of approximately 400 chairs. These 400 chairs represented the number of students registered with the Office of Disability Services at Smith College.
- First Annual Five College Disability Studies Conference in 2015. This event celebrated the multidisciplinary student, faculty, and community member work in the exciting field of disability studies. The theme “Filling in the Gaps.” was meant to encourage broad discussion of the ways we as scholars and activists have found or inserted disability where it is missing; the ways we are grappling with where our bodies and minds fit into and challenge academia.
