The Smith Europe Network, an informal group within the Smith College Alumnae Association, was inspired by Smith week in Paris in the spring of 1979. At that time, a group organized by Smith Travel went to Paris and alumnae living in Europe were invited to take part in the activities. It was a pleasant surprise to meet other alumnae living in Europe, and our enthusiasm continued far beyond that week.
When we learned that there were about six hundred alumnae living in Europe, we decided that a Europe-wide meeting would be both feasible and fun. The previous fall we had arranged a luncheon in Bern which fourteen alumnae living in Switzerland attended and enjoyed. That group provided the nucleus of the committee which planned the first Smith-Europe Weekend which was held in Luzern on October 16-19. 1980.
