Our annual International Potluck dinner provided another opportunity for Smithies to enjoy conversation and delicious eats. The abundance of desserts reminded many of us of Friday Tea at Smith. It was also nice to see many new faces. Thank you to Judy and Neil Kleinman for hosting this dinner once again, and to Monica Choi, for organizing the event.

In mid-January 2009, Don Baumer, Smith College professor of government, spoke to a group of Smithies, spouses, and friends about political polarization in America and its effect on democracy.  In his new book, to be published this Spring, Baumer argues that polarization is good for democracy.  The talk was followed by provocative discussion and tasty refreshments.  Many thanks to Mary and Len Kenney for hosting this event.

Saturday, October 18, 2008.  Our annual International Potluck dinner brought smiles to the faces of foodies in our midst.  And the conversations were particularly provocative, coming just before the election and during the financial meltdown. Many thanks to our hosts, Judy and Neil Kleinman, and applause for Monica Choi, who organized the event.

Sunday, March 18, 2007. A group of us visited the Getty Villa, with a private tour by Smith Art Professor Barbara Kellum.  The event itself was a great success, and a sellout with 25 attendees!  Barbara Kellum had visited the Villa the day prior and had truly done her homework.  Her tour was a tour-de-force.  Not only was she extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the Villa and the objects, but her personal commentary on the items provided a unique dimension to the tour.  Barbara’s commentary on the special exhibit of mosaic masterpieces from Tunisia was memorable.

Most of us stayed and had lunch together at the cafe, which gave us a chance to talk about what we had just seen (and everything else Smithies talk about) over good food in a beautiful setting.  The Getty was extremely accommodating to us, allowing entry to stragglers without tickets and providing Barbara with an ‘educator’ nametag that made her an official tour guide for the day
