Wednesday, June 1, 6:30-8:30 pm – A Julia Morgan Tribute for Alumnae of Smith College and Mills College at the Berkeley Botanical Garden (University of California at Berkeley)
Hosts: Carol Christ, Smith College President Emerita; Marilyn Schuster and Susan Van Dyne, Smith College Professors Emerita
Carol Christ, Marilyn Schuster and Susan Van Dyne, all newly relocated to the East Bay, will host an evening at the Berkeley Botanical Garden, 200 Centennial Drive, Berkeley, for Smith and Mills College alumnae. We’re eager to reconnect with Smith and Mills alums in a pop-up tribute to Julia Morgan as a pioneering architect of over 700 buildings and the first woman licensed as an architect in California in 1904. She designed several buildings at Mills, such as the earthquake-proof Campanil and Alderwood Hall (now the Julia Morgan School for Girls), as well as buildings at UC Berkeley, including the historic Julia Morgan hall where we’ll meet.
Join us for a social hour at 6:30 pm, followed by a talk by Oakland historian and noted Morgan scholar, Karen McNeill.
Never been to the Botanical Garden? Join Susan for an informal walk through the succulents on African hill at 6 pm.
No fee, but space is limited. RSVP required by May 16 at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Z8Q53fVM09mFYBgkrbmXNlTXbWta2F2bpFt1lcqMJyU/viewform?c=0&w=1
Sunday, June 12, from 1 – 3 pm, Annual Summer Tea (Atherton)
Host: Jean Davidson ’73
Please kick off the summer and join local Smithies, alumnae, current students, and incoming students at this early summer party. It’s a great chance to gather with old friends, get to know new and current students, and welcome the class of 2016 to the ranks of alumnae. There were 40 guests in attendance at this popular event last year.
Jean Davidson ’73 has kindly opened her home and garden to the Peninsula Smith Club for tea. Though there is shade, we do suggest that you bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as the weather may be warm. We would love to have all you there the entire time, but we understand busy schedules. Feel free to arrive and leave as is convenient for your Sunday afternoon.
Members of the Club will receive an Evite for this event. Non-members who wish to attend should RSVP by June 8 to thepeninsulasmithclub@gmail.com so we can prepare enough food. It’s always fun to enjoy good company on a summer day with hot or cold tea in hand. We hope to see you there!
If you are interested in hosting or coordinating an event for the Smith College Club of the Peninsula, please contact Margaret Rushing ’94 at thepeninsulasmithclub@gmail.com.
