Sri Lanka

A pear shaped island just off the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka is home to approximately 20 million people. With a historical and cultural heritage spanning over 2,000 years, the country has been known as Lanka in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, as Taprobane to the ancient Greeks, as Serendip to the Arabs and as Ceylonto the later European conquerors. Colombo – the country’s main port and industrial center – is the commercial capital while, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte is widely regarded as the administrative capital.

Congratulations to Panchali Ellepola, Class of 2010!

Panch is the Chair of the Internatioanl Students’ Organization. Pictured below with her sisters, Chethana Ellepola ’06 (left) and Erandathi Ellepola ’02 (right), she will be the third Ellepola sister to graduate from Smith College.
