Burma is a country steeped in traditional customs yet quickly emerging into social and political modernity. Beginning in Yangon, also called Rangoon, you’ll visit the Shwedagon Pagoda that Kipling called “a beautiful winking wonder,” and in the river town of Bagan, alternately Pagan, you’ll explore some of the 2,000 remaining stupas—free-standing Buddhist reliquaries—from Bagan’s 11th-century heyday. Next you’ll travel by boat to Pakokku to visit one of the country’s oldest monasteries, before continuing to Mandalay, Burma’s last royal capital, and Sagaing, home to 6,000 monks. Your final destination is Inle Lake, where the local Intha people live in unique floating villages.
