Science $1 Million Marked for Sustainable Investment
Noting that, “over the years, student leadership has been instrumental in bringing attention to the imperatives of climate change,” President Kathleen McCartney and Board of Trustees Chair Elizabeth Eveillard ’69 announced the investment of $1 million of the college’s endowment in a sustainable global equities fund. The Dark Side of Retail President McCartney in the Media
In a recent op-ed on CNN.com, President Kathleen McCartney addressed the state of free speech on college campuses. And, in response to a New York Times story on small numbers of low-income students at top universities, President McCartney noted the leadership that Smith and other women’s colleges have provided in making top-quality education available to all women of promise.
A Great Opportunity to Support Smith Sixth Smithie Swims Channel
On August 25, Paige Christie ’15 became Smithie number six to successfully swim the English Channel, starting in England and reaching the shores of France in 12 hours and five minutes. She was inspired to take the challenge when she saw the plaque on the Dalton Pool wall listing the Smith women who have completed the swim: “I knew I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t do it.”

Adopted as an infant, Caroline Clarke ’85 had little desire to know the identity of her birth parents. But when she did start digging into her past, what she discovered could have served as a big-screen drama. Instead, Clarke turned her tale into a moving memoir, Postcards from Cookie: A Memoir of Motherhood, Miracles, and a Whole Lot of Mail. Read a Q&A with Clarke here.

The Office of Alumnae Relations announces the launch of Smith Reads, a new online book club exclusively for the Smith community. By joining, you’ll have regular opportunities to talk about the latest releases, as well as the classics, with Smith faculty and alumnae from around the world. The first selection is Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do, by Claude Steele.
A Great Opportunity to Support Smith Portrayal of Muslim Women in Fiction
Read Zane Muttasem Razzaq ’15’s story about Jennifer Zobair ’93 (left) and her first novel, Painted Hands, which is about accomplished Muslim women negotiating a post-9/11 world. Zobair says she feels there is a need for diverse narratives in literature: “After my novel was released, I heard from a lot of Muslim women who told me that it was the first time they related to characters in a novel."
A Great Opportunity to Support Smith Women for the World: Update
Thank you to the 15,024 alumnae, parents and friends of Smith who donated to the Smith Fund this year, raising $12 million, which will be counted toward the Women for the World campaign’s $450 million goal. Gifts to the Smith Fund are put to immediate good use, funding internships, study-away opportunities and student scholarships. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
A Great Opportunity to Support Smith Celebrating the Music of Alice Parker '47
The Smith College Alumnae Chorus (SCAC) will present A Weekend of Song in Celebration of Alice Parker ’47 on Sept. 21 at 2 p.m., at Sweeney Concert Hall on the Smith campus. The SCAC will perform choral works by Parker, a noted composer, arranger and conductor. She and Jonathan Hirsh, Smith director of orchestral and choral activities, will share conducting duties.
