On July 22, 2009, the midday sky above China will
darken as the sun disappears behind the moon, and
stars and planets will blaze for nearly six minutes. A
total solar eclipse of this duration won't be repeated
for several centuries. It will be best viewed just outside
Shanghai at a site called Oriental Land, a green space of lawns and groves
distant from city lights. Before and after the eclipse, you'll visit Tiananmen
Square and then explore the Imperial Palace and Temple of Heaven in
Beijing; and travel to one of the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall
and visit fifteenth- to seventeenth-century Ming tombs. Before visiting
the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, tour the Great Mosque in the Muslim
Quarter. Conclude your tour in Shanghai, famous for its contemporary
energy and colonial past. Joining the trip will be Richard French, chair of
the astronomy department at Wellesley, Smith's partner on this trip.
