Art and archaeology take center stage in the colonial
city of Oaxaca, where you'll be based at the Hotel
Camino Real, a converted sixteenth-century monastery
with flower-filled courtyards and an exquisite pool.
You'll visit the imposing ruins of Monte Alban and
Mitla, pre-Columbian sites built by the Zapotec and Mixtec Indians.
At nearby craft villages, you'll observe expert artisans engage in ancient
traditions such as wood carving, weaving, and pottery—particularly the
signature black-clay pottery of Oaxaca. Trips to village markets, plus the
city's galleries and art museums, reveal work by both emerging artists
and Oaxacan masters. Soak in the colonial architecture while enjoying
downtown cafés and succulent Oaxacan cuisine, famous for its inventive
mole sauces.
