Within hours after scientists in China released the gene sequence for the novel coronavirus, immunologist Annie De Groot ’78 and her team at EpiVax, the Providence, Rhode Island–based biotech firm she co-founded, got to work doing what they do best—developing a vaccine to combat the virus. The company is now working on nine different vaccine possibilities with an international assembly of collaborators. |
President Kathleen McCartney recently announced the appointment of Baishakhi Taylor as the dean of the college and vice president for campus life, effective July 1, 2020. Taylor is currently the vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. “I am honored to join the Smith community,” said Taylor, who succeeds Susan Etheredge ’77. |
The recipients of the 2020 Sherrerd Teaching Prize winners are Carrie Baker, professor of the study of women and gender (pictured); James Lowenthal, Mary Elizabeth Moses Professor of Astronomy; and Denise McKahn, associate professor of engineering. The Kathleen Compton Sherrerd ’54 and John F. Sherrerd Prizes for Distinguished Teaching were established in 2002. |
