Smith Announces Fall Reopening Plans |

At the heart of Smith’s plan for reopening in the fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic is the health and safety of students, faculty and staff. Titled “A Culture of Care,” the plan, released on Monday, preserves students’ education and the Smith experience through four key actions: physical distancing, free regular testing, disinfection and compliance. |

The SmithVent team, a group of engineering alums, staff and faculty, took first place in the CoVent-19 Challenge, a nationwide competition to design an easily manufacturable ventilator for use during the pandemic. The team's device was chosen from more than 200 submissions. "This win speaks volumes about the power of a liberal arts education," said President Kathleen McCartney. |
Friday, June 26, marked the fifth anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges—the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized marriage for same-sex couples. Cory Albertson, a lecturer in sociology at Smith and author of A Perfect Union? Television and the Winning of Same-Sex Marriage, talks about what’s changed in the past five years and what challenges remain. |
Fuel the People, founded by Gaiana Joseph ’17 in New York, is guided by a three-pronged mission: Feed the protestors on the front lines, support local Black-owned businesses, and donate to organizations that support Black liberation. “Food is fuel for revolution. People have to be nourished to keep fighting,” Joseph says. “If you don’t have energy, how can you fight for your rights?" |

Smith College Welcomes New Trustees |
|
The Smith College Board of Trustees welcomed seven new members who began their governance duties on July 1. New board members are Abigail Edwards ’20, Anu Aiyengar ’91, Andrea Auerbach ’91, Pamela J. Craig ’79, Lile R. Gibbons ’64, Terry W. Hartle, and Kimberly A. Scott ’91. The board of trustees, currently chaired by Alison Overseth ’80, oversees the endowment, sets the annual budget and determines policies for operation of the college. |

The college continues to seek input from the Smith community about the landscape master plan for the campus. The third issue of Groundswell magazine presents results from the discovery and vision phases of this important project along with additional opportunities to submit feedback on the plan. |
