Margaret Mitchell Scholarship Fund
The Margaret Mitchell Scholarship Fund was established in 1950 with the intention of providing four scholarships for deserving young women from Georgia each year. The current value of the fund is about $1 million, and it now provides just under $50,000 per year, divided between two students. One of the goals of the Smith College Club of Atlanta is to expand this endowment to help more deserving Georgia women attend Smith. You can provide a donation to the Margaret Mitchell Scholarship Fund when you pay your annual club dues. If you are not a Smith College alumna and would like more information about the scholarship fund or to make a contribution, please contact AtlantaSmithClub@gmail.com.
Book Award
The club also presents Book Awards to juniors at Georgia high schools who are interested in applying to Smith. With the help of alumnae donations, we send a select book and small checks to help cover the cost of the admission fee. While changes in application and enrollment numbers are the result of numerous factors, the Admissions office tells us that the correlation between students who receive the award and who eventually apply to and enroll at Smith is higher than that of any other recruitment strategy. Smith is far from local and Georgia high school students are flooded with information about colleges and universities closer to home; the Book Awards are an invaluable public relations tool. If there is a Georgia school where you would like to raise awareness of Smith through sponsorship of a book award (total cost is approximately $35 each), please contact AtlantaSmithClub@gmail.com.
