To mark the day Sophia Smith signed her will establishing Smith College and in recognition of International Women’s Day, Smith celebrated Founder’s Day on Saturday, March 8. Through free activities and programs across campus, Smith came together to honor the spirit of generosity within the Smith community.
On the North Shore we celebrated Founder’s Day in three ways.
- We met for a Walk with Smithies at Old Town Hill in Newbury. It was a fun and challenging hike.
- After the walk we met up with alums at NU Kitchen in Newburyport. It was great to get to know one another better and enjoy a delicious and healthy lunch.
- In the spirit of generosity we collected donations of personal care items/toiletries for survivors of human trafficking. The following items were collected:
- Hairbrushes (#1 request)
- Combs
- Hair ties
- Hair “scrunchies”
- Feminine products (pads, tampons)
- Deodorant
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Hairspray
- Hand lotion
- Body lotion
- Any facial care products (cleanser, toner, moisturizer, sunscreen)
- Chapstick
- Alcohol-free mouthwash
- Dental floss
- Hand wipes
- Small hand towels/washcloths
- Flip flops
- Small notebooks
- Pens
These items will be delivered to a coalition of five women’s religious organizations as part of their Boston Anti-Trafficking Coalition. The much-needed items will be distributed to women and girls in six New England states who are survivors of sex and labor trafficking.
