Expanding Ties to Asia Students Awarded Gates Grant

President Kathleen McCartney's recent trip to Asia included stops in four cities, where she met with alumnae, addressed high-level groups about Smith's science- and business-related initiatives and participated in a conversation with Ambassador Caroline Kennedy about the value of women's education and the liberal arts.

An engineering course project has resulted in a $100,000 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant for three students, Darpan Bohara ’18, Yashna Sureka ’17 and Christine Yee ’17 (pictured above), who will use the award to develop a fingerprint authorization system for merchants in India. Before the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line, concerned cooks on Thanksgiving Day would consult with no less than Julia Child '34. According to a recent New York Times article, despite the fact that her phone rang off the hook every holiday, she “embraced the role of national Thanksgiving commander in chief.”
