Free Speech on College Campuses Helping First-Gens Thrive at Smith
A Smithie's Guide to Downtown
In her op-ed for The New York Times, President Kathleen McCartney considers free speech on college campuses. “College students today hold a range of views on free speech,” she writes. “Some adhere to a strict interpretation of the First Amendment .... Others assert that free speech is not truly available to all.” First-generation college students face unique challenges. They may be less prepared for demanding course loads, have difficulty navigating the college system or be afraid to ask for help. But Smith’s success in supporting first-gen students like Audrey Olmos-Govea ’17 is drawing national attention. Where do Smith students hang out in downtown Northampton? Alexandra Symeonides-Tsatsos and Chloe Lin, both class of ’16, answer that question—from ice ceam parlors to graphic novel shops—with a tour of some of their favroite places in A Smithie's Guide to Downtown Northampton.
