Maya Lin Brings Back the ‘Heart of Smith’
From the New York Times to social media, Maya Lin's reveal of the plans for the new Neilson Library got an enthusiastic thumbs up. The new design retains the library's original building from 1909, replaces existing additions with two "jewel boxes" and incorporates the use of natural light and organic materials.
Mammals from the Female Perspective Farah Pandith ’90 Looks Back The Keeper of a Desert Town
Virginia Hayssen, professor of biological sciences, begins each chapter of her forthcoming book, Mammalian Reproduction: A Female Perspective, with a story about the spotted hyena, whose unique physiology prompts a closer look at what we think we know about reproduction. In a new Women in Public Service video, foreign policy strategist and former diplomat Farah Pandith ’90 says that the most influential people in her life have been her professors, including those at Smith. Susan Sorrells ’68, who owns the small town of Shoshone, CA, uses ecotourism to protect its rugged beauty and keep its economy running. Her Shoshone Village corporation employs 22 people, including a staff naturalist, who have created hiking and birding trails that make the area a popular destination.
Family Weekend Fun
Family Weekend has been a Smith tradition since 1951, when the college began welcoming family members to visit the campus—and their young scholars. After having been apart for almost two months, students and family members catch up with one another and take part in a range of activities and events open to all over the course of the weekend.
