Oprah Winfrey Is the 2017 Smith Commencement Speaker
Oprah Winfrey—well-known global media leader, philanthropist, producer and actress—will deliver the Commencement address at Smith College’s graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 21. Winfrey will also receive an honorary degree.
A Conversation With Smith’s Activist-in-Residence President McCartney to Speak at SXSWedu Professor Kate Soper’s Musical Tour de Force
Miriam Yeung, this year’s activist-in-residence, talks about her life in activism and the projects she is tackling during her month-long residency. Yeung is the former executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum.   President Kathleen McCartney will discuss the evolution of the liberal arts in a featured panel at SXSWedu next week in Austin, Texas. The event, part of the SXSW family of conferences, brings together individuals passionate about learning and teaching. The New Yorker calls Kate Soper’s new philosophy-opera, Ipsa Dixit, a “brainy and emotional tour de force” and “comprehensively astounding.” Soper, a composer and vocalist, is the Iva Dee Hiatt Assistant Professor at Smith.
Women for the World Campaign Makes Headlines
Media outlets across the country, including The New York Times, reported on the record-breaking success of Smith’s Women for the World campaign, which raised $486 million for student scholarships and curriculum initiatives—the largest amount ever for a women’s college.
Goodbye Winter: Time for the Spring Bulb Show
This year’s show, Fields of Flowers, opens Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m., offering members of the Smith community and visitors a chance to escape the winter cold and discover a springtime paradise on campus. The show runs through Sunday, March 19.
