Draper Competition Goes Bigger, Better
In addition to the traditional competition, in which students' business proposals are judged by a panel of experts, this year’s Draper Competition, being held on April 6, will broaden its celebration of all things entrepreneurial to include virtual reality stations, food trucks and a battle of the bands.
GIS Technology Firm Takes Note of Smith GIS Class Sherry Rehman ’85 Makes Political History in Pakistan Susan Hood ’76 on Inspiring Books for Young Activists
A geographic information systems (GIS) course taught by geosciences professor Jack Loveless is receiving national attention. One student group in the class created a web-based, interactive story map of some 90 trees on campus. Their project is featured in ArcWatch, the newsletter for Esri, the company that makes the ArcGIS mapping software used in class. Pakistan People's Party leader Sherry Rehman ’85 has been appointed Senate opposition leader in the Upper House of the Parliament, making her the first woman to hold the post. Rehman has been a member of the Senate of Pakistan since 2015 and leader of the opposition in the Senate since March 2018. Children’s author Susan Hood ’76 blogs about how some children’s books are creating a generation of social activists. Hood’s latest book, Shaking Things Up: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World, features 14 trailblazing young women, including civil rights pioneer Ruby Bridges and architectural designer Maya Lin.
