On Meeting Malala and Being an Activist A Tale of One Director and Two Theaters Students Explore Material Culture of New England
When award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy ’02 organized a gathering to honor education rights activist Malala Yousafzai in her homeland of Pakistan, Sarah Belal ’01, one of Pakistan’s most dedicated human rights lawyers, was there to write about it. "Being an activist ... is a taxing road," she notes. "But when we met Malala, the work seemed validated." Daniel Elihu Kramer is serving not only as the chair of Smith's theatre department but also as producing artistic director for the Chester Theatre Company, a highly regarded summer theater company located in the Berkshires. Says Kramer, “I feel very fortunate. I get to be at Smith. I also get to do this kind of work in Chester, where there is a whole other community.” Students are discovering the ways in which furniture, textiles and domestic environments are interpreted as historical evidence of everyday life through a seminar, The Material Culture of New England: 1630-1860. The seminar takes place in Historic Deerfield, in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and examines items of material culture from the earliest colonial settlements to the Victorian era.
