Jane Fonda Collection Arrives at Smith College
A collection of letters, official papers, films and other material documenting the life of actor and activist Jane Fonda is now available to scholars and members of the general public through Smith’s Sophia Smith Collection. In all, there are 132 boxes with materials spanning the years 1932 to 2016.
Smith Botanic Garden Widens Student Outreach This Smithie Sommelier Knows Her Wines A Memorable Encounter with Barbara Bush ’47
As a summer intern, Karime Gutierrez ’20 is working on a research project designed to draw more students of color to the college’s botanic garden. “This project is an opportunity to make change,” says Gutierrez, who helped develop the Innovations Challenge proposal. “We want students of color to feel welcome at the botanic garden.”   While Franchesca Thepenier ’19 is a full-time student at Smith, she also is a certified sommelier and has been the beverage director for ConVino Wine Bar in Northampton for the last several years. Incidentally, she took over as beverage director when she was still too young to taste the wines she was ordering. As a young reporter for the Cincinnati Post, new Smith graduate Stephanie Jones ’82 tagged along with a more senior colleague to a reception that included then-Vice President George Bush and his wife, Barbara Pierce Bush ’47. Jones recounts the unexpected encounter that demonstrated the power of the Smith connection.
SSW: 100 Years of Empowering Change
To celebrate the centennial of the Smith College School for Social Work (SSW), the SSW and Smith College Special Collections have collaborated on a website that explores why this pioneering school was created and how it has evolved over the past 100 years.
Smith College Museum of Art Acquisitions
The Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) has acquired Morning in the Bowl of Night, 1973, a painting by American artist and teacher Alma Thomas (1891–1978), who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and was active in the art movement known as the Washington Color School. In addition, SCMA will steward the personal art collections of feminist artists and longtime friends Nina Yankowitz and Joyce Kozloff.
