Giving Voice to History
Historian Natalie Zemon Davis ’49 has spent her academic life combing historic archives and rare book collections in search of women’s voices, as well as voices of others who might have been ignored by previous historians. It may be one of the reasons this celebrated academic and author has been called “one of the most creative historians writing today.”
Susan Munsey, MSW ’93, Honored as CNN Hero Hampshire College to Seek Strategic Partnership Researching the Poverty/Obesity Connection
Susan Munsey, MSW ’93, has been honored as a CNN Hero for her work helping sex trafficking victims in the U.S. heal and build new lives. In 2009, she founded GenerateHope, a nonprofit that offers a safe place for survivors of sex trafficking. The organization provides long-term housing, therapy, education and medical care. On Jan. 15, President Kathleen McCartney informed the Smith community of Hampshire College’s announcement that it will “seek a long-term partner that would allow the college to achieve a sustainable financial future.” Read President McCartney’s letter and the Hampshire College announcement here. Lucine Petit Francis ’04, a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, studies health issues for children living in poverty, focusing on nutrition and obesity. "One of the biggest health issues that we see with children living in underserved areas in the urban community is the issue of childhood obesity," says Francis.
