Carrie N. Baker, professor and chair of the Program for the Study of Women and Gender, contends that the impact of the climate crisis on women and girls is often overlooked. She writes, "On our current path, we face full-scale, climate-induced calamity that will harm us all, but will subject women and girls to particularly acute forms of gendered violence and deprivation. To change course, we need social revolution and female empowerment." |
Deborah Farrington ’72, co-founder of venture capital firm StarVest Partners, wants to make sure other women have access to funds to fuel their ambitions. Investing in women, she says, is how society will change. For Farrington, the goal is securing women’s economic empowerment. “As women, it is important that we guide our own destinies, gain financial independence and have a real voice for change in society,” she says. |
Activist and author Loretta Ross is currently a visiting associate professor at Smith. The current times are the focus of Ross’ writing, teaching and speaking—new areas of activity for her after nearly five decades of frontline organizing. Formerly an activist-in-residence at Smith, Ross is completing a book about how the digital era’s “call-out culture,” where people publicly critique each other’s beliefs, affects social justice organizing. |
