In a March 10 message, President Kathleen McCartney announced a number of updates related to the COVID-19 situation. Among them: students will continue their studies off campus through alternative modes of instruction beginning March 30. Several campus events have also been canceled. As an executive vice president at RCA/Sony, Mika El-Baz ’85 is one of the most powerful people in the music industry. She reflects on her 30-year career and the importance of mentoring the next generation of executives: "If you’re investing a lot of time and effort in someone, why not get the benefit of what they’ve learned and how they’ve grown and feed that back into the company?" |
Nicole Bearden AC ’19 launched Critical Bounds, a podcast about contemporary art, as part of a class at Smith. With support from a recent Helen Gurley Brown Magic Grant, she has kept the podcast going. She says, “I hope that people who explore the podcast will find somebody’s work that they didn’t know about before, and will be able to connect in a new way with art.” |
Ingrid Yollick Alpern ’69, whose mother escaped from Nazi Germany, remembers her first encounter with anti-semitism while on an internship as a student and applauds President McCartney's zero-tolerance stance. Alpern writes, "President McCartney has made me feel safer in the Smith community with her statements that all of us are wanted and appreciated despite our differences." |

Smith Basketball Advances to Sweet 16 |

After defeating New Paltz, 62-60, in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament last weekend, the Smith College basketball team is advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
