October 2011

An Evening with Nancy Malkiel ’65 — Thinking about Undergraduate Education:  Reflections of a Long Time Dean

    • Date:  Tuesday, October 18
    • Time:  7:00pm — 9:00pm
    • Where:  Home of Cecilia Mathews, 149 Bedens Brook Rd., Skillman (609) 333-8715
    • Includes:  Dessert, coffee and tea

I’ve just completed 24 years as Dean of the College at Princeton, where I’ve been fortunate enough to have responsibility for everything to do with undergraduate education.  My reflections will begin with my experience at Smith, since Smith had everything to do with the academic career I’ve pursued and the administrative work I’ve been privileged to do over so many years.  I’d like then to talk about changes and continuities in undergraduate education at Princeton over these two dozen years – the continuities are very strong, but the changes have been substantial.  As a dean at Princeton and a former trustee at Smith, I’ll make some observations then about Princeton and Smith:  there are important similarities between the two institutions, but striking differences as well.  And, finally, I’ll talk about some of the challenges facing  elite college and universities (like Princeton and Smith)  for the 21st century.
