President’s Message: Welcome to our 2022/23 Season
This year, seeing friends will have special importance, after nearly two years of separation! In November we will begin the SCCS season for 22-23. The programs will include community and educational activities, as well as providing a chance to get together with friends.
We can look forward to a full season of four very interesting meetings, with luncheons, our annual cocktail party in April, and perhaps a December holiday party with current students. The faculty speaker program has been reinstated, but not in time for this season. However, we do have new honorary members, former faculty members Martin and Nina Antonetti who will be attending meetings. Let us know if you come across others with Smith connections. We welcome all.
Kathleen McCartney will be retiring as president in July 2023 and Sarah Willie-Breton will become the twelfth president of the college. Smith will continue have strong leadership and be in the forefront of educating young women. We can be proud to be part of that group, knowing that we should remember the past, but acknowledge the changes that have maintained Smith’s place in the future.
Sarasota member Jane Herzig developed ART: HERstory during Covid lock down as a diversion, learning of the lives and work of talented and courageous women while researching their artwork. She considers it a gift during that period of isolation, and now offers this free course as a gift to you. She has taught several repeats of the class, with many revisions and additions in each session. Some people have repeated the class and enjoyed it every time. Details and syllabus are here.
The 11 session Zoom course focuses on little known women painters from the 1540’s to the 1840’s. Why they were not well-known is central to the conversation. Each class encompasses an hour slide lecture followed by a half hour discussion.
The current session began on October 11th and 13th. However, it is possible to join the class after the sessions have begun.
The evening class meets via Zoom on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The morning class meets via Zoom on Wednesday from 11:00 am to 12:00/30 pm.
To join please contact Jane at jkherzig@gmail.com. She will add you to the day that is most convenient for you. Each session stands on its own so missing a session is not a problem. Also feel free to shift from daytime to evening at your convenience. Just let her know what works for you. The entire class program will most likely be repeated after the beginning of 2023.
Student Outreach continues to form an important part of our activities and I’m delighted that Linda Buxbaum, our retiring President, has agreed to take on this role. I commend her message to you which may be found here.
