Our Class Scholar

Madeline, Class of 2021, was the beneficiary of our scholarship last year. Prior to the pandemic she had spent a semester in Prague as part of her self-designed concentration on Cold War studies. In spite of having to study remotely for her senior year, she was able to prepare an honors thesis on “LGBTQ+ experiences in East Germany and what they say about the creation of historical memory.” Even as she lived in Cleveland with three other Smith students for her senior year, she was able to continue as a co-chair of the Smith College Wind Ensemble. She participated with the group every Monday night, hosting masterclasses with professional musicians and working on long-distance playing projects Madeline’s plans after graduation included the possibility of a fellowship at NPR, working in Washington DC for the government, and in the long term attending law school. “Either that or I’ll fulfill my secret, long held ambition to become a folk singer.”
