Read on to see advice from assigned Big Sisters at Smith plus other things each of us learned in our first weeks/months at the College. Fun stuff! Add your memories by sending them to carol_lightwood@hotmail.com
From Taffy Gould:
“It was not the College’s practice to reveal to new students, prior to arrival, the name of their Big Sister, but mine was a girl from Tennessee who apparently had convinced the authorities that she had critical advice for me ahead of time, and she wrote to me. The only thing I remember is her telling me that the black loafers so popular in the South, at the time, were not worn in the North, and that I should wait and buy a pair of brown Weejuns when I arrived!!!”
From Julie Conger:
“I was the one who went to High School in Greenwich Village, came to Smith with hair to my waist, kohl around my eyes, wearing black. My housemates thought I was from Mars.”
From Carol Lightwood:
“I was assigned a Big Sister from Pennsylvania–the closest the college could get to Spokane, Washington where I went to high school. Which brings up a distinct memory of being ribbed for saying “Warshington” — which is how most natives said it back then and many still do. I quickly taught myself to say “Washington”. I have since discovered that adding a “r” is from Scots-Irish dialect, so maybe I’ll go back to saying Warshington again.
