“New Worlds: Hunting Exoplanets with Smith College’s Telescopes”

Are we alone? How did life begin? How do planets form? These are among the questions that the burgeoning new field of exoplanets — or planets orbiting stars other than our sun — seeks to answer. Astonishingly, Smith College’s 16” telescope atop McConnell Hall is able to detect hundreds of exoplanets as they pass by chance in front of their parent stars. Prof. James Lowenthal leads on ongoing research project with students at Smith to study these “transiting exoplanets”, learn more about their composition and atmospheres, and possibly uncover new planets orbiting in the same systems. Almost every clear night, a pair from the team arrives at dusk to set up the telescope for a night of automated observing. Lowenthal will show how the observations are made, share some recent results from the survey, and comment on the rapidly advancing field of exoplanets and the search for life in the Universe.

Refreshments and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served.
